At the end of April this year CVS-Bulgaria took part in the largest service event in the world – Global Youth Service Day. Established in 1988, GYSD is now celebrated in over 100 countries. It encourages children and youth to get involved in the world’s most critical issues and to improve the communities they are part of.
This year the Global Youth Service Day coincided with the Earth Day (the 22nd of April). A Mini Grant Competition for an ecological event was held among organizations from South-Eastern Europe and CVS-Bulgaria became one of the five winners with its project “Use imagination – the world is your creation!”. The event was intended to emphasize the importance of reusing materials and it was directed at kids from “St. Ivan Rilski” Public institution for children. A group of nine volunteers prepared a workshop and together with the kids created different kinds of interesting and funny objects – flowers made of straws, pencil holders made of used jars and decorated with dough. A little table was decorated with old newspapers as well. At the end of the workshop volunteers and kids played games together and everyone had fun.
CVS Bulgaria has established a cooperation with the National Association of Therapeutic Horse Riding and Hippotherapy. The aim of the association is to help children with special needs through hippotherapy treatment sessions.
The sessions will take place on Khan Asparuh Race Course (located on Haidushko izvorche street, next to the ice ring of “Slavia” stadium) on Wednesday and Friday from 15:30 to 17:30, as well as on Saturday from 10:30 to 12:00.
Therefore CVS Bulgaria is looking for volunteers, who will be able to support the hippotherapist’s work. Before undertaking their duties, the volunteers will participate in a training introducing them to the specific characteristics of the work. The children undergoing the treatment suffer from different diseases such as celebral palsy, Down syndrome, mental diseases and other motor difficulties. During the sessions the kids will be accompanied by one or both of their parents.
The project will last 3 months and frequent attendance will be expected from the volunteers.
If there is a mutual interest, the project might be prolonged.
We would like to start work as soon as possible! So, if you are above the age of 18, with a strong sense of responsibility and discipline, and most of all – if being tolerant towards differences and accept them, you are willing to work with children with special needs, you can send us an application and CV on cvs-bg@bluelink.net with the following subject: Hippotherapy volunteer.
