Description of the EVS project 2011-CH-13
The EVS volunteers will work at the SCI office in Berne and “on the field” during the workcamp season. The main EVS task is the placement of short terms volunteers. The volunteer will be in contact with hosting projects in Switzerland as well as with our partner organizations abroad in order to coordinate the placement of the foreign volunteers in Switzerland and the swiss volunteers abroad. Another responsibility of the EVS is to help the staff in the conception and realization of workshops and preparation weekends intended for the future participants of the workcamps. The EVS will have the opportunity to get used to informal learning methods and to experience the role of a trainer. During the workcamp seasons, the EVS will not only visit some projects but will be able to take part in one or two workcamps as a leader. This role will give him/her conflict management and organizational skills, as well as skills in the field of animation with young people. The end of the workcamp season is the time for project’s evaluations. The volunteer can also develop his/her own projects/research/activities on a specific topic according to his/her interests. It could be for example in the field of public relations, social medias, creation of information material, etc…
One of the main focus of the project is also to assist in the coordination of the “theatre project” workcamps (see below). The volunteer will be in contact with centers for asylum seekers and organizations active in the field of migration, will help with media work and the preparation of coordinators. He/she can lead or help with the organization of workshops about migration and peace education and help with the evaluation of the project.
Background information on the Theatre project:
In 2009, Swiss SCI volunteers started a project with the youth culture house in Zurich (Dynamo). Their idea was to promote the integration of kids from asylum seekers centers and, at the same time, to fight prejudices and racism in Swiss society. The youth culture house is an open space that gives young people the opportunity to realize their ideas.and so it was.
The project started and took place successfully for two years now and since 2011, SCI Switzerland is promoting the project also in other cities. The kids from the asylum seekers centre and the Swiss kids get together and work on a presentation with support from a theatre specialist and the international volunteers. In this creative environment they have rich exchanges of experiences, overcome the fear to speak German or French and get new self confidence. The final presentation with friends and family attending is the highlight of the two weeks. The experience shows it again: working together towards a common objective is the best way to build bridges between volunteers from different countries as well as for the kids with different social backgrounds.
In a three-year-project, we aim to reach more kids and Swiss youth as well as international volunteers. We will build up a network with local organizations in the field of asylum in order to raise more awareness about the topic in Swiss society.
For further information on the project check the website: www.theaterflucht.ch (only French and German) and pictures.
Requirements:
- English+basic German or French.
- We are looking forward receiving someone sharing SCI values, motivated by the work with young people and volunteers from different cultures, and interested in office work!
