FLOW: Facilitating, Learning, Organising and Welcoming! – a critical Training of Trainers

23-29 April 2024 – near Innsbruck, Austria

Training content

FLOW will be focused on knowledge and practical skills development in facilitation.

We’ll start with an introduction into facilitation, going into topics like public speaking, moderation and leading a group, followed by a more detailed approach on the role of a trainer/facilitator. The main topics we’d like to focus on will be practical tips, interaction with the group, critical perspectives in facilitation (especially looking at anti-discrimination and sustainability), frame of the project, education methods and last but not least, the outcome and tryouts of projects.

The structure that we’d like to follow will give you an insight into what it means to be a facilitator, tools and activities, learning methods and a space to try it all out!

If you want to get a better idea about what these topics contain, here are a few key points from our content:

-Challenging situations & risk assessment

-How to be an inclusive facilitator and how to educate yourself

-Types of learning

-Ethical reflection on power positions of a facilitator

-FLOW as a career

-Radical self-care as a trainer

-The importance of care work in educational projects- Open Space

…and much more!

We expect all participants to come up with a (small) educational project they would like to conduct later in 2024. The trainers will support them in this process during the training and also afterwards.

We set this training up to be interactive, fun and with a diverse range of methods, with movement and interactivity. During this project, we want to create an atmosphere of peace, empathy, belonging and safety within our group.

Who’s involved in organising this?

This edition of FLOW is organised by 3 of SCI’s non-formal educators, together with SCI-IS

and SCI Austria. The facilitators: Cristina Debu, Sima Jakob, Thomas Schallhart

Participation

Financial conditions:

  • Food and accommodation during the training will be provided;
  • Travel costs will be reimbursed after the training up to an agreed limit depending on the sending country;
  • We strongly encourage green travel (i.e. avoid travel by plane, if possible; instead travel by train and bus). We are available to give you advice on this and can offer a higher travel budget for eco-friendly options;
  • Other necessary expenses, such as visa fees will be reimbursed after approval by organisers.

Simple life: The training will take place in a scouts centre with simple living conditions close to Innsbruck, Austria. You will sleep in a room shared with a few other people and will be involved in cleaning and cooking tasks.

Sustainable food: The food we provide will be vegan. This is not just a practical decision, but also an ideological one: SCI believes in the values of sustainability and climate justice – and if we want to contribute to a more peaceful planet, we need to give up on industrialised animal agriculture and its destructive effects on our planet. After being accepted to the training, you can tell us if you have any diets, allergies or intolerances that we should be aware of.

Participants’ profile:

  • Participants must be 18+
  • Participants who would like to learn about facilitation and project design & management
  • Participants who can commit to the whole duration of the project and to facilitating an activity after the project
  • Participants willing to implement the skills and knowledge they gain through the facilitation of an activity after their participation in FLOW (workshop, pre-departure trainings, camps or any other type of event inside of SCI)
  • Priority will be given to:
  1. People active in SCI international teams, working groups, branches or partner level organisations;
  2. Those with strong motivation to pursue facilitation in the future;
  3. Those with an idea to carry out a specific NFE activity after the training.

We explicitly encourage participants of all genders, sexual orientations, abilities, race and ethnic backgrounds to apply. There will be a space to share any inclusion needs before the training, and the team will be in touch in case to organise any special arrangements.

Sustainability initiatives)

Training course on project management with a

focus on social inclusion and environmental

sustainability

4-9 May 2023

Rome, Italy

Rome =, Itaky

„Youth Work in PRO.GRE.S.S.” is a project financed by the Italian National Agency of Erasmus + Programme that intends to increase the competence of the partners and their youth workers in the development and coordination of projects focused on ecology, environmental sustainability and social inclusion.

As confirmed by extensive research in the social, psychological and medical fields, young people’s needs in Europe have changed due to the scenario that has characterized the last few years: the Covid – 19 pandemic and the most recent conflict in Ukraine have contributed to an increase in the incidence of mental health problems among young people (cases of depression, apathy, anxiety among young people have been on the rise starting from 2020), and to a greater difficulty in undertaking life paths due to economic, health and geo – political uncertainties. This unease is aggravated by the perception of the effects of global issues, like climate change, which adds further factors of instability, uncertainty and anxiety to young people’s development process. The aim of the project is to update youth workers’ skills, enabling them to effectively detect the emerging needs of their target groups and to propose quality training and inclusive activities.

DETAILED CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS

————————————————————————————————————

Let’s talk about gender! Join an international training in Rome, Italy | 10-16 April 2022

A few years ago, research about gender-based discrimination within SCI volunteering camps was published and it showed the many ways how gender oppression/ discrimination/ violence/ etc. exist within our projects. In many projects, we still face a sexist division of work, sexual harassment, sexist and queerphobic jokes or sometimes also just a lack of awareness around gender and LGBTQIA-related issues. How do we react to this? How can we create safer spaces?

What to expect from the training:

  • more awareness around what gender-based discrimination and violence is
  • queerfeminist educational and conflict resolution tools to adress gender-based conflict (e.g. microaggressions, sexism, etc.)
  • non-formal education methods to address gender in volunteering and youth projects
  • self-reflection about your own practice as a coordinator/organiser/activist
  • sharing best practices with other coordinators, organisers and activists
  • getting to know many great people from around Europe and Southwest Asia

Outcome: In addition to the above, in this training, we want to create guidelines for camp coordinators to address gender-based discrimination. The guidelines will be published as an addition to the existing SCI toolkit around gender “Free to be you and me”.

Participant’s profile

The project aims to gather 26 participants (1-2 per partner organization). The participants will be youth workers, trainers as well as staff, activists, camp coordinators and active volunteers from volunteering organizations. All participants selected for this project should meet the following criteria

  • be 18 years old or older
  • be able to work in English
  • be interested in the training topics and have a strong motivation to act as a multiplier
  • able to attend for the full duration of the training
  • If somehow possible and feasible, be committed to come to the training without flying, and to travel instead by overland route.

We explicitly encourage participants of all classes, educational backgrounds, genders, sexual  orientations, abilities and ethnic backgrounds to apply. Unfortunately, the venue is not wheelchair-accessible.

Training course “OMER 1” on the topic of migration is looking for participant!

TC “Once upon the time, a Migrant’s journey: Empowerment and Resilience – 1” will take place in Greece from 07th of April till 15th of April 2020.

Background of the training:
The project was born after the meeting of three structures working in complementary fields. SCI Hellas and Concordia Sud- Est are part of the Alliance network. Javali Company is a professional theatrical company working on empowerment through the Theater of the Oppressed (forum theater, image theater, newspaper theater, life stories …). It is part of the French-speaking network of companies practicing the Theater of the Oppressed. These three organizations work on migration issues, whether by raising awareness to the general public, hosting migrants or refugees within the structure, through training projects. A recent training grouped 3 members from these organizations in order to discuss the radicalization of young people and the polarization of our societies. We flew over the tool of the human bookstore and the theater of the oppressed, which we wish to deepen in this training. We want to share our experiences and build the skills of youth workers on migration issues and the building of a global citizenship based on humanistic values by learning and putting into practice two tools: the human library and the theater of the oppressed, which are respectively specialties of SCI Hellas and Compagnie Javali. This real exchange of practice will lead to implementation with a real audience.
More details can be found here

Objectives:
Develop intercultural skills of youth leaders, professionals and migrants
– Experiment two concrete tools of emancipation and sensitization (the Human Library and the Theatre of Oppressed);
– Develop knowledge on the concepts of empowerment, resilience, intersectionality and migrations;
– Exchange good practices of each organization on the different topics of the project.

Methodology:
The training will be based on methods and tools of non-formal education, which will allow the participants to be in the position of actor and animator, to intervene and to bring their experience as much as the trainers in order to stimulate an atmosphere of knowledge sharing and mutual enrichment.

Participant profile:
We are looking for participants who are Youth workers (camp leaders, youth leaders, social workers, teachers …) and migrants or refugees who are leading youth projects or are active in their community.

Financial condition:
– Travel costs will be covered based on the unit costs of the program.
– 100% lodging and food (only vegan) are covered.

Location:
Greece, on the seaside, 3 h away from Athens

Seminar “Develop or Self-Develop: Who is the Volunteer in Relation to Colonial History?” 13-19 March 2020, Vienna.

Seminar “Develop or Self-Develop: Who is the Volunteer in Relation to Colonial History?”  will take place from 13-19 March 2020 in Vienna. It is the chance to reflect on the relation between volunteering and colonialism as well as to produce a fourth edition of the “Picturing the Global South” toolkit.

Background of the seminar
Colonialism created the political and economic context, in which we live today: Some countries have accumulated resources and wealth over centuries, while other countries have been colonized, their resources exploited, their cultures destroyed and their people murdered, marginalized and structurally discriminated. Countries of the Global South are still today disadvantaged in their participation in the global economy and in international organisations – and people of colour still face discrimination based on the concept of “race”, which was made up by the colonizers. In order to change the heritage of colonialism, we need to create global justice.
As an outcome, we will create a new 4th version of the toolkit “Picturing the Global South: The Power Behind Good Intentions”, which SCI Austria has been creating with a series of post-colonial seminars in the past few years.

Read more information in the call for participants.

All participants selected for this project must meet the following criteria:

  • be 18 years old or older
  • work with volunteer management or sending volunteering projects abroad
  • be able to work in English
  • be interested in the seminar topics (volunteering in a North-South context, colonialism, global justice) and have a strong motivation to act as a multiplier
  • commit to implement the learned knowledge and skills in practice back home
  • commit to actively participate from the beginning to the end of the seminar

We explicitly encourage participants of all genders, sexual orientations, abilities, races and ethnic backgrounds to apply. The venue is wheelchair-accessible.

How to apply?
Applications should be sent to our email
trainings@cvs-bg.org for the first selection process, after that representatives will be chosen and forward the applications to SCI Austria. All those accepted will later receive a detailed infosheet (incl. info on how to get to the venue, how to book your travels, more info about the agenda of the project).
The application form is here
Pay attention! Please, note your full name and name of training in the subject of the mail.

Deadline for applying is 08.02.2020.
